Dog Memorial Commish by SuzanneMoseley Dog Memorial Commish by SuzanneMoseley
Ok, so I may be a bit of a brown noser lol. This is a drawing I made for my supervisor at work. We're very good friends and her parents dog died earlier this year due to old age. SO! As a gift to her, I drew a portrait of the dog for her to regift to her parents.

She actually squealed when she saw it and hugged me. I was tickled pink that she liked it so much. She said her parents were really moved by it.

I was pretty happy with the results since it's been like 5-6 years since the last time I'd worked in colored pencils.

Critiques welcome. Anyone who works frequently in colored pencils I'd like to hear from because I really enjoyed this and would like to improve.

36 hours off and on.
Prismacolors and oil pencils.
150 pound multimedia paper 11 x 14

This is fantastic! A lot of excellent detail and great color combinations. I have just begun working with colored pencils and have learned a lot of interesting techniques recently. One cool thng is using masking fluid to preserve highlighted areas (like in watercolor). Another is using Oderless mineral spirits to was and blend the colors for a more paintery feel. Until recently I haven't done any art in over 20 years but I am starting to enjoy colored pencil a lot! Once again, great work. You really captured this wonderful animal.

Oh yes, I love using mineral spirits to break up the binder in the pigments. I haven't done that in a while. Have you tried gessoing the paper before working? This is fabulous with graphite and can really heighten the dark shading tremendously but blending it insanely simple due to the smooth surface and can be smoother. You just have to be careful of ridges in application of the gesso (use the spray on!) or the texture will strip the graphite from your pencil faster than you can sharpen it. I haven't tried colored pencils on that kind of surface but I bet the color would pop more rather than be subdued by the paper surface... hmm, now you got me thinking....

Oh! And thank you for the kind words!

Tried something new that was interesting. Added a heat lamp under my glass top studio table. The heat allows for quicker, more even coverage. still experimenting but its a promising techinique. Im not sure about gesso, the paper needs a little tooth in order to add enough layers for the "paintery" feel i'm going after. I think I will try it though. Wspecially with graphite. Thanks for the tip.

Oh! love the idea with the heat lamp! I'll have to try that. Thanks :)

You can still get tooth w/ the gesso.. use a roll on sponge applicator (super cheap and in house paint stores/walmart etc) and then a light sanding gives you just the right amount... you'd be surprised.

Thanks, I will try it. I just posted a new WIP "Silver" that I tried something new with and liked the results. I used Caran D'Ache Neocolor II in the snow and for highlights. It covers better (more opaque) and can be blended with just a finger. Making it up as I go along is great, sharing what I learn is even better!

That was exceptionally nice of you to put your great talents to generous use by creating a gift for your friend. It looks so lifelike and detailed, you truly know what you're doing when you put the utensil to the canvas. Very interesting in a simple way--more than sure your friend enjoyed it.

Keep it up.
