Zombie by SuzanneMoseley Zombie by SuzanneMoseley
A friend of my husband wanted to do zombie portraits of her wedding party but got no responses from the people that she had commissioned to do the work.

Just on a whim (and because I just purchased a new Wacom Bamboo tablet after I lost the pen for my old one in the move), I thought I would try my hand at a zombie portrait.

I'm hoping she will like this and commission me for the others of her wedding party. Since I don't have her permission yet, I may have to yank this later.

I usually only do photomanipulation in digital, so I am quite pleased with the results.

This took me 4 days at about 4 to 5 hours a night of experimentation before I was happy enough to call it finished.

I know it could use further refining, but you can only stare at the same thing for so long before the dirty clothes and dishes pile up and everyone starts yelling at you to come back down to the real world.

Gah.

Please critique this. This was my first true digital painting (I'm usually an oils and graphite girl).

Wow, very gruesome, I know that I wouldn't ever be able to think of something like this basically off the top of my head like you did. Bravo for that! Unfortunate for her though, I can't think of too many people who would ever want to kiss her looking like this … Unless they liked zombies. I think this is very good even for your first digital painting :aww:

He has also been a parapsychologist for have 10 years and has been behind ghost movies, on several radio shows, and credited in several ghost books. He used to work in a morgue. Said that he had a couple of experiences where a body he was working on would sit up on it's own, clearly still dead and one instance where a body walked down the hall and fell still again on the floor. All still cold and clearly dead.

LOL. Thanks. Notice the bite marks there? Yeah, she loves to look like Betty Page. I worked from her photos and kinda created a little of my own facial anatomy for her from imagination and prior knowledge. Thank you for the comment!

Yes, I do have classical training.. Good call! This was a lot of fun as it was my first time trying a digital painting instead of traditional materials.

I'm actually working on the final version of the lucky couple for their wedding portrait for all of their guests to sign in October 09.

I have a long way to go yet.. thank god I have until September to finish it!

is there an emoticon for envy?? Your classical training probably involved some art history, please say that u have looked into some Salvador Dali! smashing together imagery is a big deal to me, have you ever considered going in that direction?

My favorite story of Salvidor Dali is when a news source spread a rumor that Dali had shaved his infamous facial hair. So, to prove he still had his mustache, he hired a helicopter, attached his upper lip hair to the runners of the helicopter and was lifted from the ground. I remember the line in the book was very cliche: "Talk about a stiff upper lip!" I groaned.

What is your idea of "smashing" together imagery? In terms of Photo-manipulation or concepts?

todays modern day photoshop is without a doubt the ultimate digital/vitrtual pallette, period.  the possibilities are endless.  however, the greats in the old days were quite capable of achieving "photorealism" the old fashioned way.  just google Salvador Dali pics and i think you will see what i mean.  think about, that famous pic of two faces looking at each other and the two contours creating a wine glass image between them.  that would be a good example of the play on the pictures or imagery themselves.  conceptually, taking lets say superman and putting him into a christ pose floating above earth, leans more towards playing with archetypes using a familiar modern pop icon to make an interesting statement on not only the imagery, but also the way we interpret religious ideas through symbolism and storytelling. Dali did both flawlessly. with your skill, i believe you would revel in the challenge of this kind of surrealism. its fun. :)

Very nice, especially for a first digital painting. I love the traditional feel it has to it though, a lot of manipulations like this are over-worked and it takes away the horror - this one's giving me a really cold stare that really works.
